After Gus brings his mother up some tea and toast he tells his mother to get a shopping list ready, that he’ll do the shopping for the day as he won’t be going to school. O’Connor highlighting to the reader that Gus has now taken charge (again acting responsible). She is poorly and unable to light the fire. Gus is now an adult and is looking back on an incident that happened when he was younger and his mother was sick. Set in Cork (Ireland) the story begins with Gus waking to the sound of his mother coughing by the fire in the kitchen. It is a light hearted story told through the eyes of a ten year old boy called Gus Sullivan. ![]() In the short story The Man of the House by Frank O’Connor we have the theme of responsibility, temptation and guilt.
